Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is a two-time Academy Award–winning filmmaker whose work sits at the intersection of storytelling, social impact, and global culture. Since 2001, she has directed more than two dozen critically acclaimed films across 16 countries—projects that have not only garnered international recognition but have also sparked tangible legislative and social change.
In 2022, Obaid-Chinoy brought the emotional rigor and authenticity of her nonfiction work to narrative storytelling with her directorial debut for Marvel Studios on Ms. Marvel. The series was met with widespread critical acclaim, with episodes she directed named among The New York Times’ Best Television of the Year. Most recently, she directed a feature documentary chronicling the life of iconic fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg, which received an Emmy nomination earlier this year.

Obaid-Chinoy is the recipient of multiple Emmy Awards, the Knight International Journalism Award, two Alfred I. duPont Awards, the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and the Tällberg/Eliasson Global Leadership Prize. She was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. In 2013, she received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from the Canadian government for her contributions to filmmaking and was later honored with the Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum at its annual Davos summit.
